You already picked the brand — now clear the URL
Many founders reverse the classic order: brand first, domain second. That is fine if you treat domain clearance as a hard gate. Paste the brand stem and generate live-available variants instead of forcing a taken exact match.
Variant strategies that still feel on-brand
- Light modifiers: get, try, use, go, my (use sparingly)
- Category compounds: brand + app / hq / co when natural
- Cleaner spellings of the same phonetics
- Shortenings that still pass the radio test
If nothing works, the brand may be too generic to own on the open web — that is useful information early.
Exact .com is taken
Use domain taken rescue for TLD and strategy options, or reframe the brand entirely with the startup name generator.

Is this a legal or official domain / trademark check?
No. Domain availability uses live RDAP against registries. Trademark flags (when shown) are simple heuristics, not legal advice and not a USPTO or counsel search. Always clear trademarks properly before branding spend.
Why do AI chatbots say a domain is free when it is taken?
Language models predict plausible text; they are not connected to the domain registry unless a tool runs RDAP/WHOIS. Domain Search King only shows names that pass a live availability check before display. See the AI Domain Hallucination Index.
What if the exact .com is taken?
Try verified modifiers, alternate TLDs carefully, or reframe the brand. See domain-taken rescue.
Is this free?
Yes. Affiliate links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Generate names now Verify one domainHow do you turn a brand into a domain?
Start from the word customers already say. Strip the tagline, the legal suffix, and the word "brand". What is left is the candidate. If that exact .com is free, stop. If it is taken, change the brand word before you print packaging. A domain that only sort of matches the brand will be the thing people get wrong forever.
When should the brand move, instead of the domain?
Move the brand when the taken name is a real company a customer could confuse with you. A hyphen, a missing vowel, or a "get" in front is not a strategy. It is a typo you will pay for in ads. An invented word you can register cleanly is a better brand than a descriptive phrase you have to apologize for.
| Brand you have | Domain to try | Change the brand if |
|---|---|---|
| One distinctive word | That word, then a shorter coinage | The word is a known product in your category |
| Two ordinary words | The pair only if it is short and unhyphenated | Either word alone is the real brand |
| A phrase from a deck | Do not register the whole phrase | You cannot say it once, cleanly |
What do you open after the word is chosen?
Run it in Verify so you are not trusting a screenshot. Read invented names vs keyword domains if you are stuck between a description and a coinage. Then use the trademark check before the designer starts. The domain being free is the first gate, not the last one.
